CLONMEL GOLF CLUB
Centenary Cup is Won by Alan Shiels
The Centenary Cup was played over the weekend. This is a very prestigious competition and was the brainchild of the Club Centenary Captains in 2011, Mr. Joe Flynn and Ms. Ollie Connellan who continue to sponsor the competition. Its popularity continues since its inception and with favourable weather for the two days nearly 140 entries typifies the popularity of the competition. The competition is open to both Ladies and Gents members (played separately) and the best score by either a Lady or Gent takes home the beautiful Cup, even if it’s only for a year. The Ladies section was played earlier in the year and their best score was returned by Marjorie Walsh with an excellent score of 39 points.
The men’s section was won by Alan Shiels. Playing off of 19 handicap Alan had a very steady round on Saturday where he turned with 22 points and his brilliant finish to the final three holes of the first nine - birdie, par, par - which yielded 10 points - coupled with his two 3 pointers on the 13th (with a double shot) and 15th were timely additions to his back nine which had started poorly with a double bogey on the par three tenth. However, he ground out a useful 19 points on the back nine which saw him stave off the next best players by two clear shots. Not Alan’s first time on the podium this year - he is obviously in good form - and is perhaps one to watch for the upcoming majors. In second place, just two behind the winner was Kieran Gallagher playing off of 12 handicap. Kieran did nothing spectacular on the outward nine producing level 2s but he was much steadier on the back nine and had a very good 21 points for his 39 points total. In third place and just a shot behind was the veteran Wexford man Tom Byrne who is always consistent and indeed might have gotten himself onto the top step of the podium except for a few unlikely bogeys coming down the stretch - as the pros like to say. However, playing off of 5 handicap his 38 points was an excellent score. The gross was won by Johnny Quinn, playing off of 3 handicap who returned two halves of 17points for a very good 34 points, 31 gross.
The Club is very grateful to Joe and Ollie for this wonderful sponsorship.
1st Alan Shiels (19) 41 pts
2nd Kieran Gallagher (12) 39pts
3rd Tom Byrne (5) 38 pts
Gross Johnny Quinn (3) 31 pts
