CLONMEL GOLF CLUB
The Captain’s (Mr. Billy Hewitt) Prize
It’s a good sign of the popularity of the office of Captain of a Golf Club when there’s a good turn-out to pay him tribute by playing in his Captain’s Prize and so it was on Saturday last when more than 170 members turned out to play for Captain Billy Hewitt’s prize and what a great competition it turned out to be when no less than 22 competitors equalled or scored better that the par of 71. The recent low scores of competitions were a likely indicator of what was to come and hence nobody was surprised when Tony Norris Snr (Noggy to his many friends) scorched the course with a fabulous nett 64 off of 13 handicap. A double bogey 6 on the long par four 2nd didn’t deter Noggy as he went on to play the remaining 7 holes of the first nine in just one over par. He also had a great run on the back nine and was just four over for a total of 77 shots or a nett 64 to stay just one shot ahead of the runner up John Molloy on 65 nett. John had a very good front nine which he covered in 38 shots but had a poor run of 5 consecutive bogeys from the tenth to scupper his chances of an outright win. In third place on nett 66 was another Norris, Tony’s son Keith, who played off of 9 handicap. The gross was won by Liam Phelan who had an excellent 72 gross off of 4 handicap and in 4th place was Ian Condon (23) who also had a 66 nett but was beaten on the count back.
There was an excellent turnout for the Captain’s presentation of the fabulous array of prizes and he (the Captain) thanked all of those who have given him great support for his year to date and he was also highly praiseworthy of the sponsors for our competitions and stated that the Club could not survive without their generosity.
