Our deepest sympathy to O’Meara family on the passing of Breda O’Meara, former member of Clonmel Golf Club.  May she rest in peace.

Simon Kane wins The Pavilion Cup

The Semiton Ltd sponsored Pavilion Cup is one of the Player of the Year competitions and is also one of the prestigious ‘want to win’ competitions each year and this year was no exception when no less than 75 cards were returned on Saturday. While recent competition scoring has been exceptionally low - due in the main to the run on the ball - the scoring in this competition is indicative of the changing weather where less run means higher scores but the conditions didn’t bother the big hitting Simon Kane who returned a 66 nett off of 13 handicap. Simon has been threatening to ‘shoot low’ in his recent outings and it all came together for him on Saturday in very blustery conditions where he was out in just 3 over par. He had plenty to spare over the rest of the field but he nearly blew his moment of glory when he chalked up a 7 on the par 5 twelfth but he made amends for his only double bogey of his round with a magnificent birdie 4 on the difficult closing hole for a 79 gross or a winning 66 nett. In second place was James Cleary playing off of 2 handicap. James was out in level par with 7 pars on his card and 1 birdie and 1 bogey. He was even more consistent on the back nine where he had just 1 bogey with 8 pars for a 72 gross / 70 nett but he only got into second place where he pipped Toddy O’Brien (12) by virtue of his better last 6. Tom Duggan won the gross hitting 74 shots and the Seniors prize was won by the very popular Pat Hanafin with 72 nett - but he lost the money!

The Club is grateful to Semiton Ltd for their wonderful sponsorship.

James Geraghty wins the Texaco Garages Singles

The weather was not kind to the players who braved the many heavy showers on Sunday for the Texaco Garages sponsored competition. However, there was a good turnout of players and considering the weather the scoring was excellent and it was particularly excellent for James Geraghty who had very good 41 points off of 10 handicap. James had a great start to the season and had ‘cooled’ of late but on Sunday he showed that he is back to his best form. He was level par for the outward nine which netted him 23 points and he added a further 18 points on the very difficult back nine to take the first prize. In second place was the in-form Simon Kane with 38 points - fresh from winning the day before and playing off his new handicap (10) for the first time - and in third place was Joe Cunningham (11) with 36 points. The best gross was scored by Tom Duggan (2) with 32 gross points, his second best gross in consecutive competitions.

The Club appreciates the very generous sponsorship from Texaco Garages.

Ladies Section

Clonmel Ladies have had a tremendous run in all the ILGU competitions this year and we were delighted to have reached the semi-final of the Revive Active playing Fota. In spite of winning two matches at home we unfortunately went down in three in Fota. However, we are very proud of all our team players, managers and supporters. It was great to see so many pink t shirts at each venue and we are improving every year in these matches.  A massive thank you to everyone involved.

There was no golf last week either in the mixed on Monday or on Wednesday. This week there is the Pro/Am competition on Monday so there will be no John M Joy mixed until the following week.
