CLONMEL GOLF CLUB
O'Dwyer's Golf Store (Mr. John O’Dwyer) Singles
There was a very good turnout of players on Saturday for the Golf Shop singles despite the ‘weather warning’ from RTE and nearly everyone got finished without getting wet although at times it was difficult to stand against the wind in the afternoon. When the rain did come it washed away the early morning start on Sunday and play was only available from 10 o’clock onwards, in much better conditions than Saturday. It was surprising then that the winner and runner up - Johnny Quinn and Ned Lonergan respectively - played on Saturday and the third and gross prize winners - Martin Kane and Gavin Smyth respectively - played in the better conditions on Sunday. The wind on Saturday had little or no effect on Johnny Quinn, playing off of 3, he covered the front nine in level par after starting with a pair of bogeys but he levelled things out with a marvellous eagle three on the ninth. Not surprisingly he dropped a shot on 13 and 14 playing into an absolute gale but had a birdie on the short 17th for a back nine of 19 points and a total of 39. In second place - but only beaten on the back nine - was Ned Lonergan playing off of 20 handicap. Ned was out in probably the worse of the afternoon wind and yet he turned with a fantastic 23 points and although he scored on every hole on the back nine the conditions were too horrendous to match his front nine form. In third place was Martin Kane, just scraping home on the back nine and Gavin Smyth had a level par round off of +2 to win the gross.
The Club is very grateful to John O’Dwyer - O'Dwyer's Golf Store - for the marvellous sponsorship.
O'Dwyer's Golf Store - Results
1st Johnny Quinn (3) 39pts B9
2nd Ned Lonergan (20) 39pts
3rd Martin Kane (4) 38pts B9
Gross Gavin Smyth (+2) 34pts
The first ever family day was held at the Club on the 27th of August and it was blessed with great weather and a great turn out of members, their families and friends. There was a real Carnival atmosphere with the children (and some mammies and daddies) enjoying the Bouncy Castles and then there was the more serious side of things with a hole in one competition which turned out to be a huge success and also the putting competition which saw great talent with our young player's competing against each other. There was also a Target Shooting competition which was enjoyed by all the participants as well as the many other side shows.
Many thanks to our President Liam our Vice-President Mick for their support also to Shula McCarthy, Maud Shee and Noel Wall for looking after the putting competition and to Vincent Woodlock, Garrett & Greg Condon who looked after the Hole in one competition and Ritchie Power & Jimmy Hewitt on the target shooting competition while Martin Hanton looked after ticket sales for the raffle. Last but not least a special thanks to our sponsors John O’ Dwyer, (Golf Store), Woodlock Scaffolding & David Morris and Junior Golf. This was a fantastic opportunity taken to showcase our club and hopefully to encourage young and old alike to join this great club.

Unfortunately, the weather and other events have hit our John M Joy sponsored Mixed during August but last Monday there was an excellent entry and the winners were Gwen Walshe, Billy Lambe and Johnny Quinn. This competition had proved a big success and hopefully will run again next year. The organisers are planning a fun night for the last mixed in two or three weeks’ time.
Well done to the organisers of last week’s hospice classic and many thanks to all who played. A very very worthy cause.
Excitement is building for our big fundraiser of the year, the club classic, we hope everyone will do their utmost to play on a team. Funds are badly needed to keep our golf club in the excellent condition it is in.
Congratulations to Shula McCarthy and Helen Doyle for representing Clonmel last Monday in the Eileen Murphy Foursomes in Cork and also best wished to Anne Leavy, who is representing the ladies in the All Ireland Lady Captains winner’s prize in Roscrea next weekend
